How to Get involved

Please reach out to us at info@sustaincny.org if you cannot find an answer to your question.

The draft environmental impact statement (DEIS) pursuant to the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) for the construction and operation of Micron’s Clay, NY chip fabs is expected to be released in June of 2025, along with the NY State Environmental Quality Review (SEQR). For a project of this size and scope, the DEIS is likely to be at least a thousand pages long.

We were granted YEARS to decide on the fate of Rt. 81’s viaduct through the city, BUT now the law requires ONLY 45 days to double-check the details on Micron’s plan. It is our only opportunity to do the kind of review that might have avoided the chemical sewer that ruined ONONDAGA LAKE!

SustainCNY is requesting a minimum of 120 days for public review and comment. Furthermore, we request that the US Department Of Commerce and the Onondaga County Industrial Development Authority (OCIDA) convene a minimum of five public hearings to be held at various locations throughout central New York, including Syracuse, Clay, and Oswego. All of this is needed to explain or offset existing questions:

How are the ‘Forever’ chemicals (PFAS) used in manufacturing process going to be handled?

How is the water demand going to be supplied?

How is the energy required going to impact all of us?

We already have a housing crisis…. Is there a reasonable plan that doesn’t put this even more out of reach for our citizens?

The 45-day comment period is not sufficient time for the community to review and prepare comments for a project with the potential impact that Micron's construction and operation will have on virtually all aspects of the central New York Community.

Please sign the public petition for more time and more hearings by going to the link here:

SustainCNY is a coalition of not-for-profit organizations. More like-minded organizations are also welcome to become part of the SustainCNY Coalition. Authorized representatives should reach out on the "Contact Us" section of this website. Individuals are encouraged to join one of the organizations that are a member of the SustainCNY Coalition or consider joining a working group.  You can also use the "contact us" or "subscribe" links at the bottom of this page to stay engaged.

Each working group is focused on a specific topic. Those with expertise in that topic are invited to join the conversation. Those who are interested in learning more about a topic can participate in public education sessions as they become available online or in person. See the working group section of this website and reach out to the contact person listed.

Micron is expected to release a Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) in early June 2025. The public comment period will be a minimum of 45 days. SustainCNY and its allies have requested a 140 day comment period. Once the DEIS is approved, Micron can start construction. Because the construction site is a nesting area for an endangered bat species, construction cannot start before November 2025. If construction starts in 2025 it is anticipated that the first chip manufacturing facility (fab) will be operational in 2029.
